Hawthorne was a prominent romantic novelist of the 19th century. He was adept at using romantic imagination, symbolism, psychological analysis to explore the inner world of the characters and present the theme. His masterpiece The Scarlet Letter was full of language skills, especially symbolism. Symbolism is throughout the whole novel and has various meanings, so Hawthorne was regarded as the pioneer of the modern symbolism literature. Different people have different interpretations of the symbolic meanings of this novel.

Symbolism is a means of artistic expression of literary creation which depends on the inner link of two things, using some specific images to present abstract thoughts, emotions and concepts. Symbolism plays a very important role in literary writing. It brings a lofty significance to the article and makes the article has a subtle and profound theme. The Scarlet Letter is the master work of Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was a great American romantic novelist in the 19th century. It is also regarded as the pioneer of symbolic novels. In The Scarlet Letter , Hawthorne perfectly and skillfully adopted lots of symbolism. The scarlet letter A connects the four main figures closely and it enriches the symbolic meanings of A, making this novel full of twists and turns and deepening its theme.

    Each scene, person or plot is full of symbolic meanings in The Scarlet Letter. From the beginning to the end of the story, this novel is worth reading again and again. People from different age and background have various understanding of it. For example, the scarlet letter A on the gown of Hester Prynne has different interpretations. Some people think it symbolizes Adultery, some think it represents Arthur Dimmesdale, Amazon, Aged, Anguish , Ability of Hester Prynne and so on. And also the main four characters have profound meanings in this novel. There are so many ways to shape a character. The simplest is to name the characters and make them vivid and special according to their characteristics, appearance or physiological features. Hawthorne named the main figures according to his own creation intention. Their special names can reveal the main characters personalities and fate, as well as the background of the novel, the plot, the ending, the theme and so on. Therefore, each figure has its rich meanings. For example, Roger Chillingworth symbolizes rogue, because his first name Roger is the partial tone of rogue. And chillingis derived from the word chilly, which means “cold. It indicates that Chillingworth was cold-blooded.. Worth shows that something is worth admirable. Chillingworth left all his property to Pearl when he died. And the four characters themselves has abundant symbolic meanings. For example, Hester Prynne was treated as the symbol of strength and independence.
